Senegal Coach Suspended over AFCON win

Suspended Senegal Coach, Pape Thiaw

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Senegal national team coach Pape Thiaw following one of the most controversial and dramatic finals in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) history. The decision comes in the wake of unprecedented scenes that overshadowed Senegal’s 1-0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in the tournament decider on January 18, 2026.

Historic Victory Marred by Controversy

Senegal clinched their second AFCON title after midfielder Pape Gueye scored in the 94th minute of extra time, reversing a tense 0-0 scoreline. The triumph, however, was engulfed by turmoil after referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a controversial late penalty to Morocco — a decision that ignited furious protests from the Senegal squad.

In an extraordinary act of dissent, Coach Thiaw ordered his players to walk off the pitch, prompting a halt in play that lasted nearly 15–20 minutes and sparked heated debate across the football world.

Return to the Pitch Thanks to Mané

As the Senegalese team retreated — leaving fans, officials, and even some players in confusion — captain Sadio Mané intervened, persuading his teammates to return and resume the match. His leadership was widely credited with saving the title for Senegal and preventing what could have been a disastrous forfeit or disqualification.

Once play resumed, Morocco’s Brahim Díaz missed the decisive penalty in dramatic fashion, with Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy making a crucial save. The momentum shifted, and Senegal held on for the win in extra time, sparking jubilant celebration among their supporters.

CAF Takes Firm Action

Despite the victory on the pitch, CAF’s disciplinary committee took a stern view of Thiaw’s conduct. In an official move announced on January 20, 2026, Thiaw’s suspension was confirmed — though the governing body has yet to specify the precise length of the ban, leaving his future with the team uncertain.

CAF officials emphasized that leaving the field in protest, regardless of the circumstances, undermines the integrity of the sport and violates tournament regulations. The suspension signals a strong warning to teams and coaches about respecting officials and competition rules.
