Senegal vs Morocco: Lions of Teranga Defeat Atlas Lions

Date:

In a thrilling and controversial climax to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Senegal defeated hosts Morocco 1–0 in extra time to lift the continental trophy. The Lions of Teranga delivered a memorable performance, culminating in a stunning goal in the 94th minute, which earned Senegal its second AFCON title in history.

The showdown at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat was filled with drama. Deep into stoppage time, a controversial penalty was awarded to Morocco after a VAR review, prompting Senegal’s players to walk off the pitch in protest briefly. However, after captain Sadio Mané urged his team back, Morocco’s Brahim Díaz stepped up for the penalty only to have it saved by Senegal keeper Édouard Mendy.

With momentum swinging back in their favor, Senegal struck almost immediately in extra time. Gueye’s powerful strike found the top corner, sending Senegal into raptures and silencing the home crowd.

Senegal has now won the Africa Cup of Nations twice — first in 2021, when they defeated Egypt on penalties, and now again in 2026. Their success continues to cement their status as one of Africa’s preeminent footballing powers.

Celebrations erupted across Senegal, particularly in the capital Dakar, where fans filled the streets with fireworks, music, and dancing as news of the victory spread. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared a public holiday to honor the team and pledged financial rewards for the players and coaching staff in recognition of their achievement.

For Morocco, nicknamed the Atlas Lions, the result was a bitter disappointment. Though a proud footballing nation with a storied history that includes one previous AFCON title in 1976, they have now waited nearly 50 years for another continental triumph. Hosting the tournament had raised expectations among local fans, but the final ended in frustration despite Morocco’s spirited performance.

Both teams will take important lessons from the encounter as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures. Senegal will draw confidence from another strong display, while Morocco will look to regroup and convert promise into results.

As two of Africa’s most respected football nations, clashes between the Lions of Teranga and the Atlas Lions remain must-watch events — and this match was no exception.
