Prime Minister Mia Mottley has clinched a third consecutive term in office after her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won every seat in the country’s House of Assembly, according to early results reported by state broadcaster CBC Barbados on Thursday.
The BLP secured all 30 constituencies, defeating the opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP) led by Ralph Thorne. The sweeping victory further strengthens Mottley’s political standing both at home and abroad, where she has emerged as one of the Caribbean’s most prominent leaders.
In her victory address, Mottley pledged to prioritize social and economic equity.“Our first responsibility is to ensure that poverty is reduced and injustice is eliminated, creating real opportunities for all,” she told supporters gathered in celebration, many dressed in the party’s signature red.
She also declared Friday a public bank holiday to mark the win.The 60-year-old leader reaffirmed her commitment to safeguarding Barbados’ democratic institutions. The country recently commemorated 75 years since universal adult suffrage was established, removing property ownership requirements for voting.
Throughout the campaign, the BLP emphasized economic management, rising living costs, and Barbados’ role in global affairs. Meanwhile, the opposition focused on concerns over public safety and infrastructure, arguing that greater attention should be paid to domestic challenges.
Speaking after the results, Thorne described the outcome as disappointing but acknowledged the orderly nature of the campaign and thanked supporters.Barbados, the easternmost island in the Caribbean, has a population of approximately 283,000 people and covers just over 430 square kilometers, making it slightly more than half the size of Singapore.
